Johnston offers five day workshops entitled "Introduction
to the Monotype". A monotype is a hybrid art form, combining
aspects of both painting and printmaking. The print is made
by applying inks onto a smooth plate of plexiglass, using a
variety of techniques for layering several colors. The finished
plate is left to dry overnight. The plate is then covered with
a piece of damp paper and rolled through a printing press. The
combination of moisture from the paper and pressure from the
press causes the image to transfer to the paper. Only one printcalled
a monotypeis made from each plate. The plate is then washed
off to be used again. The process offers a range of techniques
and effects not possible in direct painting on paper. Only water-based
inks are used in this processno toxic solvents or turpentine
are needed. Write for details.
